University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Promotes Francisco López-Caballero, PhD, to Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry

We are pleased to announce that Francisco López-Caballero, PhD, has been promoted to Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. 

Dr. López-Caballero received his PhD in neuroscience from the University of Barcelona, then came to the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry for postdoctoral training in clinical neurophysiology. He joined the Pitt Psychiatry faculty in 2023. 

Dr. López-Caballero’s research aims to improve our understanding of auditory neuroscience and psychosis, focusing on neurophysiological biomarkers for early psychosis detection. He integrates techniques including computational modeling, electroencephalography, and magnetoencephalography. Dr. López-Caballero currently contributes to research on an R01 grant funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (PI: Brian Coffman, PhD) comprising a systems-level examination of structure, function, and connectivity in the temporal lobe auditory cortices and the inferior frontal gyrus auditory-executive cortex, known to be impaired in schizophrenia. As co-investigator on the study, Dr. López-Caballero leads computational modeling activities to assess fronto-temporal dysconnectivity. He has authored peer-reviewed articles published in influential journals and presented his work at meetings of national and international scientific organizations
