Mary Phillips, MD, MD (Cantab) Elected to Association of American Physicians

We are delighted to announce that Mary Phillips, MD, MD (Cantab) (Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, Clinical and Translational Science, and Bioengineering, and Pittsburgh Foundation-Emmerling Endowed Chair in Psychotic Disorders), has been elected to the prestigious Association of American Physicians (AAP). Dr. Phillips’s membership to the Association was formally recognized at the AAP annual meeting in April.

Dr. Phillips’s research focuses on using multimodal neuroimaging techniques to elucidate functional and structural abnormalities in the emotion processing, reward processing and emotional regulation circuits of the human brain that are associated with symptom dimensions of major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Her research also focuses on 1) identifying the neurodevelopmental trajectories in these circuits that are associated with the emergence of such disorders during adolescence, and 2) determining how neuroimaging techniques can be used to identify biomarkers reflecting underlying pathophysiologic processes that confer risk for these disorders. Her most recent work examines how neuromodulation techniques can be targeted to specific neural circuits in individuals with mood disorders.

Dr. Phillips has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including: the NARSAD Nellie Blumenthal Investigator Award; the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) Joel Elkes Award for Outstanding Clinical Research; the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation Colvin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research; the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award; and the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP) George N. Thompson Award for Distinguished Service.

Dr. Phillips has been named a Highly Cited Researcher multiple times, having published highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% of citations in her field. She is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, has served as president of SOBP, as a fellow of the ACNP, and has served on the ACNP council.

“Election to the Association of American Physicians is an exceedingly well-deserved honor for Dr. Phillips, who is an outstanding scientist and an internationally recognized leader in her field,” said David Lewis, MD (Chair, Department of Psychiatry).

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Phillips!
