Mark D. Miller, MD Promoted

Mark D. Miller, MD Promoted to the Rank of Professor of Psychiatry

Congratulations to Mark D. Miller, MD on his recent promotion to the rank of Professor of Psychiatry.  

The overriding theme in Dr. Miller's clinical work and teaching has been on innovations in psychotherapeutic approaches with older individuals. In his roles as the medical director of the Late-Life Depression Program and as a staff psychiatrist within the Benedum Geriatric Center, Dr. Miller is the resident expert on the use of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for patients suffering from major depression to complicated grief to mild cognitive impairment.  Throughout his career, Dr. Miller has demonstrated his ongoing commitment to training medical students, psychiatry residents, clinical fellows, and social work students.   He developed and has directed the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Course for 15 years, and has supervised residents and geriatric fellows rotating through the Benedum Geriatric Clinic for over 20 years. Dr. Miller has also actively been involved in curriculum development and supervision of Master's level Social Work students and family practice residents at St. Margaret's Hospital and internal medicine residents at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Dr. Miller is a popular lecturer and educator, and has presented at lectures, workshops and seminars at local, national and international professional meetings.  

In addition to his clinical and educational activities, Dr. Miller has been actively involved in research throughout his career. He currently serves as the medical director of two National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded R01 grants and is a co-investigator on a third R01 grant funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Since joining the Department of Psychiatry he has co-authored 92 published peer-reviewed articles, five book chapters, and two books.
