Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in Depression: Current Clinical Practice / Future Directions and Neuromodulatory Transcranial Focused Ultrasound: The Premise & Promise

Daniel Varon, MD Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine & Medical Director, TMS Services, UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital
Khaled Moussawi, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology & Bioengineering & Director, Translational Neuropsychiatry through Neuromodulation (TN²) Lab, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Join us on September 22, 2023 for our first Clinical Grand Rounds of the new academic year when Daniel Varon, MD and Khaled Moussawi, MD, PhD will present on the topic of "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in Depression: Current Clinical Practice and Future Directions."

Dr. Varon is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of TMS Services at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. After completing a combined Psychiatry/Neurology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, he relocated to Pittsburgh where he completed a clinical fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital and was appointed to the Department of Psychiatry faculty. Dr. Varon's clinical interests include geriatric psychiatry, neurocognitive disorders, and interventional psychiatry. His presentation will focus on "TMS in Depression: Current Clinical Practice and Future Directions."

Dr. Moussawi is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and Bioengineering and directs the Translational Neuropsychiatry Through Neuromodulation (TN²) Lab at the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating from the MD/PhD program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), he completed a residency in Neurology at the Mass General Brigham Program affiliated with Harvard Medical School, followed by a clinical fellowship in Neuropsychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and a research fellowship at the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). He joined the Department of Psychiatry faculty in 2020. Dr. Moussawi's lab investigates the neurobiology of substance use disorders and use of neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) to treat drug addiction and related neuropsychiatric disorders. In his presentation, Dr. Moussawi will focus on "Neuromodulatory Transcranial Focused Ultrasound: The Premise and Promise."

Drs. Varon and Moussawi will review the use of TMS in the treatment of refractory depression, the protocols currently approved and barriers to access this type of treatment for patients. They will also address new accelerated TMS protocols currently being explored and implemented in different clinical settings.
