Integrating Geriatric Principles into Oncology Care: A Focus on the Cognitive Domain

Dr. Allison Magnuson Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Rochester

The Brain, Behavior, and Cancer Seminar will welcome Dr. Allison Magnuson on December 19th as its featured speaker. Dr. Magnuson is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester. A light lunch will be provided to attendees.

This seminar will introduce Hillman Cancer Institute Researchers to topics in cancer and aging research, particularly in areas relevant to cognition. Older adults represent the majority of patients with cancer, however, this group is largely underrepresented in oncology clinical trials. Cognition is a particularly important aspect of geriatric assessment, given that a proportion of older adults have concurrent cognitive impairment. Dr. Magnuson is a dual-trained medical oncologist and geriatrician with a research focus in cognition, cancer and aging. She will discuss recent work by her team on the use of geriatric assessment in caring for older adults with cancer, including in the prediction of chemotherapy toxicity and improving communication for this population. Additionally, she will discuss the development of a cognitive intervention for older adults receiving chemotherapy.
