In observation of Juneteenth, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Community Building Workgroup invites Pitt Psychiatry faculty, postdocs, residents, and staff to Community Connections: Learn From and Engage with Community-Based Organizations, hosted by the Department of Psychiatry.

This virtual event will take place on Friday, June 17, 2022, from 12-1pm and will feature representatives from three organizations serving the Pittsburgh area:

  • Gateway Medical Society – Jan Madison, MD: Gateway Medical Society was established in Pittsburgh in 1963 as a component of the National Medical Association, with the mission of eradicating disparities in healthcare. Dr. Madison will also discuss Journey to Medicine, which works to provide pre-adolescent students interested in medicine with the tools necessary to thrive in the medical field.
  • Gwen’s Girls – Kathi Elliott, DNP, MSW, CRNP: Established in 2002, Gwen’s Girls offers holistic, gender-specific programs, education, and experiences for Allegheny County’s at-risk children and young adults.
  • Helping Out Our People (HOOP)Cathy Welsh: HOOP is a coalition of families from the Woodland Hills School District that have lost a child to gun violence. As a grassroots organization, HOOP aims to heal, inspire, motivate, and mentor individuals throughout the community, with the goal of disrupting the disease of violence and preventing future loss.

Each of our three invited guests will describe their organization’s mission, with time allotted for questions and discussion. Community Connections is a great opportunity to engage with community leaders and learn more about the excellent advocacy work they do in our region.
