Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Type 2 Diabetes

Sanjay R. Patel, MD, MS

Professor of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Sleep and Cardiovascular Outcomes Center and the UPMC Sleep Disorders Clinic

The Center for Sleep and Circadian Science welcomes Dr. Sanjay Patel as its featured speaker for its Grand Rounds.

Dr. Sanjay PatelDr. Patel's research interests focus on understanding the epidemiology of sleep disorders with particular emphasis on chronic partial sleep deprivation and obstructive sleep apnea and the potential effects of these disorders on metabolism. He has published extensively on the subject of obesity management and glucose metabolism with sleep apnea, as well as the association between curtailed sleep and long term health effects. He has been one of the first to identify long sleep as a predictor of adverse health outcomes and is currently conducting a clinical trial evaluating the cardiovascular impact of treating sleep apnea in a diabetic population.

Abstract. Although it is well known that sleep disorders are routinely underdiagnosed, routine screening for sleep disorders is controversial due to a lack of data on the effectiveness of such programs.  Given the high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in type 2 diabetes and the potential impact of sleep apnea on diabetes control, we assessed the impact of a program to routinely screen and treat sleep apnea in a typical type 2 diabetes cohort.

Location: Biomedical Science Tower (BST), Room 1295.
