2017 Clinician Educator Showcase

Sixth Annual Clinician Educator Showcase Highlights Innovations
in Teaching, Clinical Care, and Program Development

The Department of Psychiatry and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC (WPIC) welcomed over 120 clinician educators, trainees and staff to WPIC on October 12, 2017 for the Sixth Annual Clinician Educator Showcase.

Two members of our faculty were recognized for their outstanding service and many contributions to the Department and WPIC during a special awards ceremony. Department Chairman Dr. David Lewis presented Dr. Hader Mansour with the UPMC Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service (ACES). The Department celebrated Dr. Dwayne Spiker's appointment as Clinician Emeritus and his many educational, clinical, and research contributions to the University of Pittsburgh and the Institute.

The plenary session focused on the Business of Psychiatry and featured a presentation by Christopher Gessner, President of WPIC and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Four talented early-career clinician educators presented their findings from projects they led as part of the popular Speed Dat(a)ing session:

  • Sarah Arshad, MD - Is Diversity Training Relevant to Pediatric Resident Education?
  • Shelly Kucherer, MD - Treating Cancer-Related Cognitive Dysfunction with Memory and Attention Adaptation Training: A Group Program Approach
  • Meredith Spada, MD - Teaching Residents to Teach: Self-Assessment in Medical Education
  • Crystal White, MD - Preventative Interventions for Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatients Identified as "At-Risk" for Falls and Restraint

Showcase attendees participated in a series of afternoon breakout sessions led by experts from WPIC and the Department of Psychiatry. The interactive sessions featured practical advice on topics ranging from designing and implementing clinical value and quality improvement projects to teaching in a multidisciplinary environment and managing unprofessional behavior. Participants also enjoyed networking and catching up with colleagues during the luncheon and afternoon breaks.
