Dr. Amy Herschell Promoted

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Promotes
Dr. Amy Herschell to Associate Professor of Psychiatry

Congratulations to Amy Herschell, PhD on her promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Psychiatry by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Herschell is a graduate of West Virginia University where she earned Master?s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology. She also attended the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, where she completed her pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology, and obtained postdoctoral training through a three-year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) at the University of Pittsburgh. She was recruited by the Department of Psychiatry in 2007 and has also held a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Psychology since 2012.

The primary focus of Dr. Herschell?s research is the implementation of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) in community practice. She is particularly interested in improving treatment programming for high risk children and she has worked to build clinical expertise and a program of implementation research around two EBTs for children with histories of experiencing harsh physical discipline/abuse and/or externalizing behavior disorders. Dr. Herschell has served as the Principal or Co-Principal Investigator for six externally funded grants and served as the Evaluation Director for the Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership funded by SAMHSA. Dr. Herschell has published 30 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and serves as the first or corresponding author for 19 of those publications. In addition, she has seven published book chapters to her credit and has also authored more than 20 other publications and published abstracts, and has also presented her research findings throughout the United States and Canada.

In addition to being an accomplished researcher, Dr. Herschell has been actively engaged in mentoring of trainees and junior faculty. Over the course of her career she has mentored 36 undergraduate students in both the University of Pittsburgh?s and Carnegie Mellon University?s departments of psychology, many of whom have gone on to masters programs and doctoral programs in clinical psychology. Dr. Herschell is also a member of the teaching faculty of the federally-funded T32 training program ?Clinical Research Training in Child Psychiatry,? and she is currently the primary mentor of two postdoctoral research fellows. Her service to the academic community also includes reviewing manuscripts for a number of significant journals including the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Behaviour Research and Therapy, and Children and Youth Services Review, and serving on the editorial boards of Child Maltreatment, the Handbook of Pediatric Psychology, and Education and Treatment of Children. She also is active in a number of key professional societies and organizations including the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy International.
