Elisabeth J. Kunkel, MD is the Chief Medical Officer of Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (PPI), a joint venture of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey School of Medicine and UPMC-Pinnacle, a true academic-community partnership. She is a Professor and Director of Population Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the Milton S. Hershey Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, the Joyce D. Kales University Chair in Community Psychiatry, and Vice Chair for Community Psychiatry. PPI is an 89-bed psychiatric hospital, with 2 partial hospitalization programs, and a myriad of outpatient psychiatric services for patients of all ages. Dr Kunkel oversees 25 physicians, 2 service line leaders, and 20 therapists.

Previously, Dr. Kunkel served as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University where she worked from 1989-2017. She publishes and presents frequently in administrative issues, consultation-liaison psychiatry, psycho-oncology, and has served as a co-investigator on research studies in medically-ill populations.  Her main research interests are administration, patient satisfaction, psycho-oncology, and cancer prevention and control. Dr. Kunkel is a graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program. She also completed an administrative fellowship with the American Association of Academic Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry (AACDP) in 2010.  From 2011-12, she served as President for WESH (Women Executives in the Sciences and Healthcare), a multi-specialty organization for executive women.  She served on the founding steering committee for the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) of the AAMC and was the only GWIMS representative for Thomas Jefferson University.  She currently serves on the AAMC CMOG Steering Committee and was selected to the highly competitive, AAMC CMO Leadership Academy. Dr. Kunkel was born and raised in Europe and the Boston area.  She graduated with a B.Sc. from McGill University in psychobiology and stayed there for her degree in Medicine.  She trained in Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center and then completed a Psycho-oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1989.  Since 1989, she has been an academic psychiatrist, first at Thomas Jefferson University and then morer ecently, at the Milton S. Hershey Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.
