Victor Villemagne, MD, Elected to Association of American Physicians

Congratulations to Victor Villemagne, MD (Levidow-Pittsburgh Foundation Chair in Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Disorders and Professor of Psychiatry), who has been elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP). Selection to membership in AAP is an indication of the pre‐eminence and the highest caliber of physician‐led science accomplishments and scientific leadership.
One of the most highly regarded global experts in Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers, Dr. Villemagne is extremely accomplished in in vivo imaging of brain pathology and aging and neurodegenerative disorders and has made invaluable contributions to his field. Among Dr. Villemagne’s research findings in this area, he has established that the process of amyloid-β accumulation in the brain can be detected by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging 15-20 years before the onset of dementia. This discovery has substantially impacted the diagnostic paradigm of Alzheimer’s disease, and is incorporated into current research and clinical trials worldwide. Recently, Dr. Villemagne has been instrumental in the validation of novel blood biomarkers for the prediction of amyloid-β burden in the brain, as well as their predictive power for cognitive trajectories.
Dr. Villemagne co-leads five National Institute on Aging (NIA) studies, serves as principal investigator on two additional grants, and has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles in top scientific journals. He is an Aging Mind Foundation Fellow and has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher across multiple years. Dr. Villemagne has received top awards including the Alzheimer’s Association’s de Leon Prize in Neuroimaging (Senior Scientist) and the Kuhl-Lassen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Brain Imaging (Brain Imaging Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging).
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Villemagne!
