Naturalistic Follow-up of Adolescents with Bipolar I Study

Contribute to Understanding of Bipolar I Disorder in Teens

This study looks at symptoms of Bipolar I Disorder in adolescents over time. As a result of this study we will increase knowledge of the effect this illness has on the adolescents functioning and gain information on the health services which adolescents use.

Adolescents experiencing symptoms of Bipolar I Disorder may be eligible to participate if symptoms of mania last for one week and include:

  • an abnormally "high" or irritable mood
  • decreased need for sleep
  • racing thoughts
  • increased activity
  • engaging in high-risk activities

Course of Study

Following a brief screening to determine eligibility to participate, parents will be interviewed and adolescents will receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Those diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder will be eligible to continue in the follow-up study. At four month intervals adolescents and their parents will be interviewed regarding symptoms experienced in the past months, functioning at home and school , and health service used. This study does not include treatment. Referrals will be made when needed.
