Moving from the “Virtual” to the “Real” World:  Facilitating the Transition to Adulthood in Asperger’s Disorder

Our Presenters:

Young adults with Asperger’s Disorder face social and life challenges in their transition from high school to the adult world of employment or college and independent living.  Building the ‘map of the world’ to navigate adulthood requires much skill building, practice, coaching and support.  Often the passion of video gaming in the ‘virtual world’, to the exclusion of other activities, can be impairing, and the use of therapeutic interventions can help practice for ‘real world’ social interactions.  This Clinical Grand Rounds will focus on identifying these challenges, discussing psychiatric co-morbidity, describing cognitive and social interventions, and presenting the story of a young adult who is gaining skills through the Perspectives Program.

Presented by the Office of Clinical Affairs at WPIC
