GIS-Based Assessment of Social and Environmental Exposures for Large Cohorts and Clinical Trials
Jane Ellen Clougherty, ScD
Assistant Professor/ Director of Exposure Science
University of Pittsburgh
The Biobehavioral Medicine in Oncology Program
University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute
Fine particulate air pollution has been associated with respiratory, cardiovascular, and cancer outcomes, and recent epidemiologic and toxicologic evidence indicates that chronic social stress may modify susceptibility to pollution exposures. Dr. Clougherty will review recent evidence on social-environmental interactions in chronic disease, and describe GIS (Geographic Information Systems)-based methods for quantifying exposures to social and environmental exposures, including urban air pollution and social stressors. Finally, she will discuss the application of GIS-based social and environmental exposure metrics in clinical trials for asthma and other chronic disease outcomes, to investigate the differential efficacy of treatments by underlying chronic exposures.
The Cooper Classrooms are located on the ground level of the Hillman Cancer Center, 5115 Centre Avenue, Shadyside. After entering the building walk to the left past the elevators. Facing the gift shop turn right down the hallway. Room C is the 3rd door in the lobby area on the left.
